Surgical Pathology

Surgical Pathology

The pathologists at Physicians Laboratory have a wide range of expertise in pathology and laboratory medicine. All are AP/CP trained and board certified with subspecialty fellowship training in surgical pathology, hematopathology, dermatopathology, breast pathology, cytopathology, transfusion medicine and head and neck and endocrine pathology. We provide medical laboratory directors and consultants to a large number of different sized hospitals and clinics in the four state area.

Physicians Laboratory utilizies a same day histology processing technology (Express), provided by Avera McKennan Histology Laboratory and directed by our pathologists, on about 50% of all surgical cases and almost all small tissue biopsies. This approach gives us the ability to read out cases within hours of processing (e.g. specimens received in the laboratory by noon will be ready for our pathologists to read out that same afternoon).

We provide specimen collection instructions and requirements to all Physicians Laboratory clients via this website. They are located under the Client Services tab. Please refer to these requirements before submitting specimens to the laboratory if there is any question about performing a specific test. Or call our Client Services department at 605-322-7212. Your patient's care is always of utmost importance to us and proper specimen preparation is key to rendering a timely diagnosis.
